"String gauge" refers to the size of the string, as in how thick, measured in thousandths of an inch. Bullet strings attach a tiny cylinder of brass shaped like a bullet to the end of the string in a one-piece construction. Use some string cleaner with a special wipe, or simply a polish cloth, to keep things properly maintained. Guitar strings are going two ways right now: one is looking forward to using cobalt, coating strings, new tech, the other is looking at offering players an authentic vintage experience.
